The Grove Park Inn

The Golf Course first opened for play in 1899 and was redesigned in 1924 by Ross. The 6,720-yard, par 70 layout is a shot maker's challenge with emphasis on accuracy rather than power. From beneath the crest of Sunset Mountain, the players' ascent from the somewhat flat, yet undulating front nine to the gentle slopes and sometime steep inclines and descents of the back nine all offering spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This course is immaculately maintained and is considered one of the finest conditioned courses in North Carolina.

In 2005, The Golf Course was rated 32nd best in the state by the North Carolina magazine golf panel. This ranking is 37 spots better than the previous year when it debuted in the “N.C. Top 100” at #69. This also signified the largest jump in stature by any golf course in the state from 2004 to 2005.

Also, in 2005, Golfweek magazine included The Golf Course in its 2005 “America’s Best” listings. The Golf Course is rated as the 8th best in North Carolina with five of the seven courses rated higher located at legendary Pinehurst.

Other honors bestowed upon The Golf Course include Golfweek’s “Best Restoration” designation in 2002 after the resort spent $2.5 million to reclaim the past glory and spirit originally inspired by the great Donald Ross. Also, Golf Digest listed the course as “One of the ten best courses in the United States that is 100 years old or more” in 2004.
